Sustainability

We are very proud of the fact that No.1 Wine and Spirits AB is a Swedish family run company which uses local raw materials - water and wheat. Sweden was the first country in the world to pass an environmental protection act in 1967; Sweden also hosted the first United Nations Conference on the Environment in Stockholm in 1972.

Since then, Sweden has not looked back, managing to grow its economy substantially while reducing carbon emissions and limiting pollution. More than half of Sweden’s national energy supply comes from renewables and Swedish legislation aims to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Swedish sustainability

For more than a decade, Sweden has been in the top ten of the globally respected Environmental Performance Index produced by Columbia and Yale Universities, with exceptionally clean air and clean water alongside its low emissions.

NO.1 COMPANY OBJECTIVES

At No.1 Wine and Spirits AB we strive to have a Swedish and Global sustainability mindset in all areas of our business by sourcing a vast majority of our materials locally. As a Swedish family run company, but with a truly global reach, we are constantly working on ways to reduce our impact on the environment in all areas of our brand and production.

Based in Vänersborg, we are a stone’s throw from Lake Vänern, a glacial lake formed more than 10,000 years ago, where importantly all of our water is sourced for our spirits brands. In addition to our local water source we also use locally grown Swedish wheat which is sourced from farmers in Västra Götland. As a company, we are also very proud that we meet EU requirements for Organic certified production.

Local Swedish Collaboration

We are connected to the Beverage Industry for Climate Initiative. An initiative started by the Swedish retail monopoly, Systembolaget, in conjunction with the Swedish interest groups of the brewing and W&S industry. All participance within the initiative collaborate to measure their carbon footprint and further set individual & common goals. This in a constant aim to minimize the environmental impact together.

Within the Spirits industry, energy consumption at distilleries, especially during the distilation process, accounts for 49% of the environmental impact; with packaging accounting for 20% of the environmental impact. Through collaboration with suppliers and industry organizations who share our values, we are working towards a shared goal for positive climate action.

We have a phrase that “Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something”. For No.1 Wine and Spirits AB, we have therefore set the following goals:

  • We are working towards being climate-smart with packaging materials for our spirit ranges. This means following Systembolaget and their local Swedish requirements and the wider global demand for the use of bag-in-box, lightweight glass bottles and rPET which produce less harmful emissions during production.

  • •We are constantly working with bottle suppliers to look over the possibility to reduce glassweight.

  • We are reducing our carbon footprint by constantly reviewing raw material and finished goods transportation more efficient and more environmentally friendly.

our Climate goals

We are working towards a more planet sustainable range where as many of our packaging solutions as possible are climate-smart. We are constantly looking at recycled cardboard for our boxes and other recyclable packaging solutions. In Sweden we have aligned ourselves with Systembolaget's initiatives, (The Swedish Alcohol Monopoly), regarding more products being packaged in bag-in-box, rPET and lightweight glass bottles that contribute to lowering emissions during production and transport.

As 20% of the alcohol industry’s emissions are related to the transport of finished goods and raw materials, we are making more environmentally conscious smart choices by reducing transportation where possible. This is an area that we are constantly managing and aim to make more reductions.
